Webinar: Building a SaaS Business in 2010

The Evolution of Software


Last night I gave a talk on SaaS to about 100 members of the NY Entrepreneurs Business Network and the NY BizSpark Meetup group at Microsoft’s office in New York (thanks to NYEBN and MSFT ISV Evangelist Gunther Lenz for inviting me). We had a very good discussion around the progression of the software industry from Client-Server to Web Applications and the ASP’s of the late 90’s on to the current SaaS paradigm. Devon is the Director of Business Development at Apprenda where he leads the partner and alliance channel programs. Apprenda's SaaSGrid application server is the leading enabler of the SaaS delivery and business model paradigms, providing multi-tenancy, scale out, monetization and more. Devon was previously a Vice President at the Venture Capital fund High Peaks Venture Partners where he focused on deals in software, digital media and technology enabled services while also supporting the fund’s activity in the clean tech and medical device industries. During his five years with the fund he worked with hundreds of start-ups and was a frequent panelist for business plan competitions and guest lecturer on venture capital and entrepreneurship. Prior to entering the venture capital industry, Devon co-founded a start-up that developed one of the first Software as a Service (SaaS) implementations of Business Intelligence and Analytic software for mid-market clients, a strategy that has since been adopted by the industry leaders. During the company’s lifecycle, during which the team brought two products to market and achieved revenue traction, he was responsible for business strategy, product management and sales. Devon began his career as a technology consultant leading business intelligence, data warehousing and application development projects for clients in the manufacturing, distribution and business service sectors. In this role he worked closely with senior business managers to bridge the gap between business problems and technology solutions, managed joint sales efforts with major ISV’s and was a frequent speaker at software user groups, seminars and conferences. Devon holds a B.S. in Management Information Systems from Clarkson University where he also completed core coursework in mechanical and electrical engineering. While at Clarkson, Devon was a founding member and Vice President of the university’s Tae Kwon Do team.
