Though intended/unintended may be a good way to think about this problem, I think the winner will be the one who can provide *transparent* online/offline capability. There are many times when I walk around with my laptop in the office, I may go offline (un-intended) but then I wouldn't want to explicitly "save" work.
Though non-trivial there are several solutions - plugs-ins and some notion of a process/state machine is key.

Hi. Well, it is definitely possible. When implementing, however, you have to choose your poison. Some use a plug-in if the need to dynamically update a local data cache is necessary. There are many strategies unfolding for this. If I get a chance, I'll probably write an article on some different potential implementations.

This is a great question and I'd be interested to hear people's methods of handling this. We had a client that 'chose' our competitor b/c they said they could work offline. We are struggling to understand how this is truly possible, or if it's work around with a custom built plug-in with uploading capabilities.
